No entry found for this Boxford in the Domesday survey. Parker (1855) notes that "the bowl of the font is modern, but a panelled pedestal remains". James (1930) writes: "The font has a fixed cover (17th cent.) opening at the side and painted with texts within". The font and its cover are illustrated in Knott (2007?). The stone font is octagonal unmounted, and stands on a polygonal plinth with "priest's stone"; the sides are ornamented with blind Gothic arches. The font cover is of the "rim-buffet" type with two volumes: the lower one has vertical sides with doors that open to provide access to the basin well and to the painted inside [scrolls inscribed with Gospel texts - cf. Inscription area below] of the cover; the upper volume is a Jacobean-type dome with a cross finial. The octagonal pedestal is covered in travery patterns all around; the basin and lower base are moulded and probably modern; the plinth is definitely modern.
