Scene Description: Source caption: "Den gamla dopfunten i Järfälla kyrka, Järfälla, Stockholms län.

Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Uppland (1921- , Bd. VI, hft. 4: 531, 558-561) as a sandstone baptismal font of the late-12th century; the basin is cylindrical with tall sides and a conical underbowl, and is believed to be the work of a Mällarad workshop, a central Swedish work; the basin sides, as well as those on the underbowl, are completely covered in a busy low-relief, the main structure of which are several large circles occupied by different animals (birds, deer, fabulous animals...), interlace, etc. The base is round and has a roll moulding on the upper end; below it, four protruding heads, one of which (usually a human head) is badly damaged (the others appear to be one ram and two felines); the rest of the base is plain. The same source (ibid.) gives the baptismal fonts at Bro, Sånga and Litslena (Uppland) and the one at Ytterselö (Södermanland) as cognate fonts. [NB: for a fuller subject analysis of the motifs on this font see the BSI entry for Sånga, as the decorative programmes are similar].
