Church Notes: church documented 1337 but built ca. a century earlier
Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Uppland (1921- , Bd. II, hft. 2: 223 and fig. 195 on p. 228) as a mid-12th century sandstone baptismal font believed to be originally from another church [it is suggested that the original church may have been Frötuna - cf. Index entry]; it consists of a hemispheric basin ornamented only with a moulding around the upper rim side; the pedestal base has an upper cylindrical part to fit under the basin; it finishes in a centre ring after which the pedestal becomes square, shaped like an upside-down cushion capital. The font appears in a worn state, especially the basin, which is badly damaged at several spots. Noted and illustrated in the SHM’s database Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 940915F1] as a "mellansvensk verkstad" baptismal font made of sandstone ca. 1200. There is also a modern font of wood in this church [cf. ImagesArea] that was used until the medieval one was put together again and reinstalled for use at the east end of the nave; it now [August 2010] is used again for baptisms in conjunction with a metal baptismal dish, as is customary in northern churches.
