Font Notes:
There is an entry for Teigh [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SK8616/teigh/] [accessed 20 July 2015], but it mentions neither cleric not church in it. The Victoria County History (Rutland, vol. 2, 1935) notes: "The earliest recorded presentation to the church of Teigh was made in 1239 [...] The church [...] was rebuilt in 1782 in the Gothic style of the day [...] by the fourth Earl of Harborough (rector 1743–73), the west tower, which is of 14th-century date, being alone retained. [...] A stone font of nondescript character, which stands on the north side of the altar, was carved in 1845 [...] by the rector. [...] There is also a portable ewer-shaped font of mahogany, lined with lead and ornamented with brass, which rests on a brass arm fitted into a socket attached to the communion rail." [NB: the bracket font was later moved to the nave, as was the other one, "of nondescript character"]. Pevsner (1984) actually reports two fonts in this church: "A mahoganny vase of elegant shape, originally fixed to the altar rails, and a stone font with rude detail carved in 1845 by the then incumbent." [NB: the 18th-century wooden font is a rare and representational example of an English "bracket font", one that was neither footed nor wall-mounted, but held by a bracket, as its name suggests [cf. Image area] -- this type of bracket font is common in Protestant churches in the Netherlands, often attached to the pulpit side. Pevsner, Harris and Antram (1989) note another 'bracket font': "a white earthenware piece, 12 in. high, on a bracket"]. Noted and illustrated in Chris Jones [www.leicestershirechurches.co.uk/teigh-church-holy-trinity/] [accessed 20 July 2015]: "a fine wooden font in the shape of an urn which was installed when the church was built, this was originally attached to the altar rails but later moved".
