There are eight entries for Surlingham in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TG3006/surlingham/] [accessed 24 August 2020] none of which mentions priest or church in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) names two parish churches in Surlingham and writes: "entered in Norwich Domesday Book; where it is said, that Surlingham St. Saviour had the same patroness with St. Mary [...] The church of St. Mary, hath a steeple about 50 feet high, round at bottom, and octangular at top, and four bells in it [...] The nave and north isle, are both twelve paces long, the church nine broad, and the isle three; the chancel is ten paces long and six broad; there is a south porch, all leaded. [...] On the font are the emblems of the 4 Evangelists, the shield of the instruments of the Passion, the emblem of the Trinity, that of the sacrament, viz. three cups, with a wafer on each of them, and the arms of the East Angles." The font is described in Chambers (1829): "On the font are the emblems of the four Evangelists, the shield of the instruments of the passion, the emblem of the Trinity, and that of the sacrament, with the arms of the East Angles." Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of 1870-1872) does not mention the font, but notes: "The church is old but good; and there was formerly another church, now a ruin." Noted and illustrated in Cautley (1949). Described in Pevsner & Wilson (1999): "Octagonal, C15. Against the stem four lions, against the bowl four lions and four angels holding shields with the symbol of the Trinity and the Instruments of the Passion and three crowns and three chalices." Noted and illustrated in Knott (2008): "the 15th century font is like a melting cheese, with deep set reliefs in the traditional East Anglian manner." Octagonal mounted baptismal font very similar to the font at Wingfield, Suffolk; the angles of the underbowl are, like those at Saxmundham and many other East Anglian fonts of this period, ornamented with angels on the upper level, with rosettes on the lower level; the octagonal pedestal base looks like the one at Oulton: each alternate side is occupied by a seated lion or a buttress; also like the font at Oulton, it has an octagonal lower base. The wooden cover is octagonal and flat with a know handle; modern. [NB: we have no information on the font of the original 11thC church here] [cf. Index entry for Surlingham No. 2 for the second parish church].
