Font Notes:
Described and ilustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Blekinge (1926-1965, Bd. II: 18ff; Bd. V: p. 81ff) as an early-13th century mounted baptismal font; the basin is round with vertical sides and a rounded underbowl; the basin sides have two bands of foliage and palmette motif, the front of the upper band is interrupted by a bust of Christ with a cruciferous halo; the back with an Agnus Dei with a cross; a Runic inscription appears on the basin; the underbowl is decorated with wide ribs. The base is formed by four couchant lions, each biting the hind quarters of the one ahead [NB: actually some of the prey is definitely human]. The same source identifies the material as "Åhussandsten" [=sandstone from Åhus] and cites Tynell and M. Rydbeck for the classing it with the Maglehem-Vitaby group of fonts. The old font is raised on a modern square plinth. 18th-19thC silver baptismal dish. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [910519F1] as a Vitabygruppen baptismal font made of sandstone ca. 1200; the SHM entry highlights the presence of Christ and an Agnus Dei on the basin sides, as well as a lion on the base; some colour remains present.
