INFORMATION

FontID: 05739VAL
Museum and Inventory Number: Museo Arqueologico Provincial de Valladolid
Church/Chapel: In a museum [orig. from Tiedra]
Country Name: Spain
Location: Valladolid, Castilla y León
Font Location in Church: [in a museum]
Century and Period: 4th century (?) / 10th century (?), Early Christian? / Mozarabic?
Noted and illustrated in Palol (1967) as a small round marble basin with a star-shaped upper rim, the points of the star corresponding to the ribs which decorate the ourt sides; the upper surface of the rim is decorated with incised animals: a snake, birds and several fish, as well as with a decorative scroll pattern and incised triangles; the bottom of the underbowl is flat, suitable for a pedestal base. Palol (ibid.) notes some of the paleo-Christian elements, the baptismal and eucharistic symbols, some of which fit with the Visigothic iconography of the 7th century, as well as the caliphal influence ino the scroll pattern, and, although dated by other authors to the 4th century, Palol suggests a mozarabic pedigree and a date in the 10th century [="Nosotros la creemos mozárabe; quizá, ya, del siglo X"]. Palol (ibid.) reports that this object was found outside Tiedra, in the Roma road between Toro and Medina de Rioseco, in a field of 4th-century ceramic and mosaic remains; later moved to the Museo de Valladolid. It is listed in the web page of the MUSEO DE VALLADOLID [archaeology] as a baptismal font originally from Tiedra in Sala IX.
