Church Notes: "The first recorded church on the site was a wooden structure built hurriedly in 627 to provide a place to baptise Edwin, King of Northumbria. Moves toward a more substantial building began in the 630s. A stone structure was completed in 637 by Oswald and was dedicated to Saint Peter. The church soon fell into disrepair and was dilapidated by 670 when Saint Wilfrid ascended to the see of York. He repaired and renewed the structure. The attached school and library were established and by the 8th century were some of the most substantial in Northern Europe.[...] The church was damaged in 1069 during William the Conqueror's harrying of the North, but the first Norman archbishop, Thomas of Bayeux, arriving in 1070, organised repairs. The Danes destroyed the church in 1075, but it was again rebuilt from 1080. Built in the Norman style, it was 111 m (364.173 ft) long and rendered in white and red lines. The new structure was damaged by fire in 1137 but was soon repaired. The choir and crypt were remodelled in 1154, and a new chapel was built, all in the Norman style." [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/York_Minster
In 741 the church was destroyed in a fire. It was rebuilt as a more impressive structure containing thirty altars. The church and the entire area then passed through the hands of numerous invaders, and its history is obscure until the 10th century.

Bond (1908) describes the former anchor of the old font cover: "In York Minster [...] there still remains high up in the centre of the nave on the north side a medieval dragon-head in wood from which was suspended the chain which led the font cover." No mention of the font is made in Bond. [NB: the location of this dragon-head shaped anchor or bracket up in the clerestory, above the north aisle arcade would implies that the font would have been located directly below, a somewhat doubtful location for a baptismal font]. Brown (2003) mentions a medieval font here which "disappeared without a trace", as well as a later, 17th-century font that "had been positioned under the seventh bay of the south nave arcade"; the latter font "had disappeared by 1735, perhaps as a result of the repaving of the nave". The web site of the city of York [www.welcometoyork.co.uk] informs that the actual font is "mid-15th century" and that it "came from the chapel of the Vicars Choral in Bedern. Its cover, designed by Sir Ninian Comper in 1947". This same source states that "this is the only font in the Minster" [NB: not entirely true since there is also a recent font of modernistic design at the west end of the south aisle]. On-site notes: the mid-15th century font and Comper's 1947 gilded cover are located in the crypt; the font consists of an octagonal basin on a round pedestal base and a square lower base; the inner well has a centre drain; the basin is not lined; the cover by Comper is beautifully painted on the inside with images of several saints: Ethelburga, Edwin, Paulinus, Hilda and James, and coats of arms on the outside; also on the outside, around the top, is a painted inscription.
