Described in Rutter (1829): "The font is circular and ancient" [NB: an illustration of the church interior in Rutter (ibid.) shows part of the basin of a baptismal font: round and decorated with a blank arcade of round arches]. Bond (1908) lists the font at Yatton as one of several having a ledger or bracket affixed to a nearby wall or pillar; this ledger (illustrated on p. 65 of the same source) is believed to have served as lectern for the baptismal manual or ritual; the one at Yatton, like the other at Wraxall, has a figure ornamenting the lower part (an angel/archangel at Yatton). Bond (ibid., 303) quotes an archival entry recording the cost of the font cover: "At Yatton xvis. was paid to John Cross, carpenter, in 1450, 'pro coopertione baptisterii'; this was the same John Cross who made the great screen at Yatton in 1454". Bond (ibid.) gives further archival references of similar expenses related to this font: "At Yatton in 1506 there was paid for a line, 2d; in 1533 for a ring and a staple, 1d.; in 1534 for mending the cover, xijd.; in 1539 for a lock, iiijd.; in 1546 for a lock and key, 5d.", reports which illustrate the wear and tear to which the baptismal font was undergoing.
