Scene Description: Source caption: "St Andrew's Church, Utterby. Grade II listed. Constructed of iron and chalk, dated back to 14th century. The tower is 14th century and has three stages and a parapet. Pevsner described the church as “rough looking”. The porch was probably added in the 15th century and is noted for its archway of whimsical carvings including a Green Man, a man with a monkey on a string and an ape bearing away a child. In the chancel is a C14 piscina with cusped ogee head and on the north side a square aumbry and statue bracket. On the north wall is an important monument in sunken relief which portrays Gilbert de Cumberworth with his hands clasped in prayer. Originally there would have been strips of brass inlaid into the carving. The folds on his sleeves and the metal bands around his wrists indicate that Gilbert was a deacon, a man of some substance and that, as was the tradition of the times, he was probably the second son of a wealthy family."

Despite its name roots, Utterby is not found in the Domesday survey. Baptismal font here noted in in Fowler (1874). Sutton (1898) writes: "The font, very simple in design, is placed against the westermost pillar of the arcade. The stone upon which it stands is deeply hollowed out on one side, apparently as a drain for the water." Described and illustrated in Bond (1908) as an octagonal mounted baptismal font; the basin has a large blind quatrefoil window on each side; the chamfer is plain. The pedestal is also octagonal and plain except for two thin mouldings, one at each ende of the upper section; the lower base splays out and is also plain. The font stands on a plinth that is about the size of the lower base; on the one side it prolongs as a rectangular "kneeling- or priest-stone"; on the side opposite the wall of the church the plinth has a drain hole. This drain "instead of passing into the ground, is an open channel leading into the churchyard" (ibid.) Noted in Pevsner, Harris and Antram (1989): "Font. C14 and recut, with a drain."
