Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor (volym 178, Gotland: 56-57, 78) as a mid-17th century baptismal font of the type commonly found on this island: a small hemispherical basin mounted on a baluster-type pedestal and raised on a small square plinth; the font is decorated with Renaissance low-relief motifs painted in blue, black and red. An inscription [cf. Inscription area] on the upper surface of the rim has the date 1642 and the initials GS with a trademark in between; they are believed to belong to Gertt and Smitt, master masons active in the middle of the 17th century in Burgsvik [NB: Burgsvik, on the southern tip of the island, has the main sandstone quarries in Gotland; they have been worked since the Middle Ages until recently]. On-site notes: the font has no drain; we found no font cover present.
