The font cover is noted in Glynne's (1877) entry for Newington, Kent, "is a 'buffet' cover similar to that in Ticehurst Church; it cannot be raised, but three of its sides form a door which opens outwards upon hinges". Bond (1908) describes the font cover as being of a class he calls 'Rim Buffet': "They are fixed to the rim of the font and have shutters opening like those of a triptych [...] three of their sides forming a door which opens outwards upon hinges." The illustration in this same source (p. 304) lets see only the upper rim of the basin, which appears octagonal and plain. Harrison (1920), too, describes the cover without mentioning the font itself: "Magnificent font canopy (15th c.) with flamboyant tracery and folding doors". Whiteman (1994) describes the font cover as "a 16th-century octagonal oak cover with folding doors, elaborately carved, similar to those at Rotherfield and Sedlescombe". Howard & Crossley (1919) note that the font cover "shows foreign influence in the design of its flamboyant tracery that decorates the interior".
