Church Notes: round-tower church
The Domesday entry for "Stoutuna", transcribed and translated in Blomefield (1805-1810) reports "there was a church endowed with 65 acres"; Blomedfield (ibid.) adds: "The Church is a rectory. In the reign of Edward I. Roger Bigot Earl of Norfolk, and Earl-Marshal, as capital lord, was patron, and it was then valued at 12 marks; the rector had a manse with 30 acres of land; paid Peter-pence, 12d. Carvage, 6d. q. and it is dedicated to St. Michael." Bond (1908) writes: "In 1631 at Stockton, Norfolk, 13s. 4d. was paid 'for the Cover of the funte' and 4s. 0d. 'for the painting of the funte'". The font and the cover mentioned in that reference are noted in Pevsner & Wilson (1999): "Font. Original C14. A heavy piece with the four signs of the Evangelists in figures nearly in the round.- Font cover. Jacobean, with crocketed edges." The four symbols of the Evangelists protrude significantly from the sides of the basin, an uncommon design that appears in a few Norfolk fonts of this period; between these are pairs of trefoiled arches or windows; the single support, octagonal and moulded, does not seem right for such a massive basin. Raised on a two-step quadrangular plinth that appears modern. [NB: we have no information on the font from the Domesday-time church here].
