Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Västergöland (1922-, Bd. I, hft. 3: 378, 379) as a sandstone baptismal font in the general style of Othelric's workshop, like the fonts at Skalvum and Skeby; in the actual ornamentation it is related here to the baptismal font at the Skara "domkyrka" [=cathedral] and the one at Forshem. The basin is cylindrical with tall vertical sides; around the sides there is an arcade of nine round arches, the spandrels made up of foliage motif; in the arches, the following program [L->R]: 1)processional Greek (Maltese?) cross surrounded by an inscription [cf. Inscription area]; 2)male warrior holding a spear (?) in his left hand, while the right rests on the sword hanging from his belt; 3)male warrior holding a sword in the right hand, a long shield in his left; 4)male warrior wearing helmet, holding a sword in his right hand and a round shield in his right; 5)lion (?), the tail over its back; facing left; 6)cleric holding a crozier in his left hand, the right hand rasied in benediction; 7)cleric holding staff or tall candle in his left hand, right hand raised in benediction; 8)this arch has a blank lower part; on it is an Agnus Dei with a thick cross on its back; 9)male on horseback, holding an object in his right hand, which the source (ibid., p. 379) describes as a palm leaf and suggests that the person may be Stephen; the underbowl appears plain. The pedestal base has a thick ring moulding at the upper end another at the bottom where it widens. The suggested date in the source (ibid.) is towards the middle of the 12th century. In Hallbäck (1971). Noted and illustrated in the SHM’s database Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 920520F4] as baptismal font possibly of the Skaragruppen made of sandstone in the late-12th century.
[NB: photographs of the font taken at different dates show that the font was rotated position several times; it is also understood that the font would have been originally located at the west end of the church, near the entranceway; any reference to the exact position of a motif in relation to the N-S-E-W directions is therefore meaningless].
