There are three entries for [North and South] Hayling [Island] [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/XX0000/north-and-south-hayling-island/] [accessed 20 June 2018], none of which mentions priest or church in it. The Mirror of Literature, Amusement and Instruction (no. 969, vol. xxxiv, 21 September 1839: 186) notes a "square form of font on five columns". Knight (1867) reports only one font in this church: "The font is Norman". White (1878) reports "a very antique font" in this church. An entry in the Proceedings of the British Archaeological Association for Wednesday, 18th November 1885, reads: "Mr. John Harris of Belvedere read a paper on the 'Saxon font in South Hayling Church, Hayling Island, Hants.', and exhibited drawings to scale of the four sides, which are sculptured with interlaced work. It is hoped that the paper will be printed hereafter in the Journal". The article (?), which includes a description of the object and its measurements can be found at https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/00681288.1886.11887375?journalCode=yjba17 and https://doi.org/10.1080/00681288.1886.11887375
[accessed 20 June 2018]. Listed in Romilly Allen (1888) as one of several "examples of fonts with ornmament of early character". Described in Cox & Harvey (1907) as "a small font of Anglo-Saxon knot-work, fully described by Mr. Romilly Allen in vol. il. of the Victoria County History of Hants." Described in Bond (1908) as a "doubtful example" of Anglo-Saxon baptismal font found at the bottom of a shallow well. "It is undoubtedly of Pre-Conquest date, but having a large hole at the bottom, and a small hole at the side, it may have been a well-head, not a font." The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 3, 1908) notes: "The whole building is set out as one design, and was probably in course of construction from the second quarter of the thirteenth century to the end of the third quarter, the chancel being the earliest part. [...] At the east end of the same aisle is a very interesting and early rectangular stone bowl, the sides curving outwards at the top, and ornamented with interlacing patterns. There appears to be no drain in the bottom, and its original purpose is not certain". The current font will be re-positioned." [cf. Index entry for South Hayling No. 2]
