There are two entries for Shorwell [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SZ4583/shorwell/] [accessed 20 February 2020] neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. Cox & Harvey (1907) inform that "the font cover, the gift of Sir John Leigh, c. 1620, has this inscription -- 'And the Holy Ghost descended in bodily shape like a dove upon him. Luke 3, ve. 22.'" Cox (1911) notes: "The font, which stands by the westernmost pillar of the south arcade, is an ordinary octagonal example of 15th century mouldings. The pyramidal cover, of early I7th century, has well-designed Jacobean panels, whilst round the base, in admirably cut capital letters, runs the text : " And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him."" Bond (1908) mentions a Post-Reformation baptismal font here dated to ca. 1620. [NB: discrepancy to be resolved]. The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 5, 1912) notes: "The church of St. Peter, though of 12th-century foundation, has no work remaining earlier than the 13th century [...] octagonal font with its elaborate oak cover surmounted by the figure of the Holy Dove and having round its base the legend 'AND THE HOLY GHOST DESCENDED IN A BODILY SHAPE LIKE A DOVE UPON HIM, LVKE 3 VE. 22.'", of approximately the same period as the pulpit, ca. 1620. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SZ4573283000] notes: "Octagonal stone font with Jacobean strapwork front cover with dove finial and hoist inscribed "And the Holy Ghost descended in a
bodily shape like a dove upon him. Luke 3 Verse 22"."
