The baptismal font at the church of St. Mauritius in Saanen reached wider popular awareness when it made its appearance on the three-franc stamp issue of September 6, 1979 [cf. WEB site http://www.stamps.ch/CH/CH_EN/e_1979.html] [accessed 2 October 2009]. It is an octagonal font of sandstone with a busy tracery/reticular pattern covering both basin and base, but there are the symbols of the Evangelists around the basin, busts of John the Baptist, James the Greater, Madonna and Child, Christ and St. Mauritius. [NB: it appears very similar to the font now at the Schlosskirche at Spiez [cf. Index entry for Spiez No. 1]] A 'communiqué de presse' from the Chef-lieu du Saanenland dated February 2003 mentions "les fonts baptismaux en grès du XVe siècle" [source: www.gstaad.ch] [accessed 2 October 2009]
