Font Notes:
Illustrated in Gallego Palomero (1998: 301) as the baptismal font in which St. John of Avila was baptised. The font shown has a very shallow basin ornamented with ribbed pattern on the outside; the base is a cylindrical column with twisted "torsade" pattern, ending in a square element at top and bottom. The caption for this illustration reads: "se conserva muy restaurada en [...]" [=it has survived, with much restoration in [...]", and the font looks very late indeed. Since the date of birth of the Saint was January 1499 (ibid., p. 22) and the baptism would have taken place not too far from that date, there seems to be an apparent conflict [NB: is it possible that the font was so greatly restored as to make it appear 16th-1th century?]
