The baptismal fonts at 'Broad Hembury' [sic] and North Molton are described in Lysons (1806-1822) as "octagonal, very richly ornamented with quatrefoils, foliage and the figures of saints under niches." Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 reports "a very rich octagonal font" in this church. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Perpendicular period. Described and illustrated in Hussell (1910): "The stone font [...] is a fine example of Late Perpendicular work, about 1480 (Edward IV). It is octagonal and unusually high [sic], measuring 4 feet 4 inches from floor to top of basin, and 2 feet 5 inches across the top. The basin has panelled and traceried sides, with mouldings at the top and bottom, diminishing inwards to the coving, which is very boldly carved in conventional foliage. The stem and base are also octagonal, and the former has niches with carved figures of saints. This font is one of the best of its period in Devon, the different portions contrasting admirably with each other, and the workmanship being excellent." Pevsner (1952) notes: "Font. Octagonal, Perp[endicular], with small figures against the shaft, and pointed quatrefoils and panelling against the shallow bowl." The figures on the stem sides are damaged and rather worn, but they all appear to be male; one is clearly identifiable as a bishop; one other carries a head and perhaps a long weapon, and may represent either St. Denys or St. Thomas of Canterbury; several could be clerics; others apostles.
