There are thirteen entries for Oxford [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SP5106/oxford/] [accessed 9 November 2016], two of which mention a church in each. Gardner's Gazetteer (1852) has: "The font is of an elegant and uncommon design, of the time of Henry III. [i.e., 1216+], enriched with the dog-tooth ornament". Described in Paley (1844) as a "very handsome" font of "the pure Early English style" decorated with dog-tooth motif. In Murray (1882) as a font from the time of Henry III [i.e., 12-16-1272]. Described and illustrated in Bond (1908). The Victoria County History (Oxford, vol. 4, 1979) notes: "The church was probably built as a private church by Edwin son of Godegose, to whom Henry I confirmed it between 1123 and 1133, [...] but at its dedication Walter, archdeacon of Oxford, granted it the tithes of his villeins at Walton, [...] and it soon became parochial. [...] The early-12th-century church presumably consisted of a nave and chancel, of which a portion of the nave walls survives [...] Early in the 13th century the nave, aisles, and arcades were rebuilt, and a south porch added. [...] The font is 13th-century". Square mounted baptismal font; the square basin has been deeply carved with ornamental columns at the corners, and vertical bands of dog-tooth motif, three per side. An interesting characteristic of this font is that the inner-well is in the shape of a quatrefoil, not a common one among fonts of this period [cf. Index entry for Lenton for a Norman font with a lobular inner-well shape]. The base consists of the classical early arrangement of one broad central shaft with four detached slender colonnettes at the angles, all five with moulded capitals and bases; the lower base is very short and square; the whole is raised on a square plinth with a "priest's stone" prolongation. On-site notes: the wooden font cover, flat and decorated with metal, is of the 19th-century [dedication plate of ca. 1880]; the font is general good shape, with some repairs and stone replacement in the usual upper rim areas; the lining of the inner well is a plumbing work of art.
