view of church exterior - southeast view

Scene Description: Source caption: [...] According to the Rev. A.M.Y. Baylay (in 1908) the oldest part of this church is its late C12th (or early 13th) stone tower, which may well have stood clear of the original medieval church that was probably of timber. The whole of the tower is said to be of one date with the spire being a later addition dating from the C14th or C15th. The church itself evolved through C13th, C14th and C15th and was restored in 1860. The spire it seems was substantially repaired in 1883 and the chancel was restored in 1890. [...]"

There is an entry for Lowdham [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SK6646/lowdham/] [accessed 17 November 2014], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Described and illustrated in Bond (1908) as a baptismal font of a type "which appeared late in the thirteenth century, was a straight-sided pediment, richly crocketed and cusped, and crowned with a foliated finial"; this font is one of a few of this type and period that has retained a multiple-column base: a broad central shaft and eight slender colonnettes, one at each angle of the basin, all plain at the stems but with foliated capitals and moulded bases. The upper rim of the font shows two iron brackets or staples installed to secure the lid. The font is also reported in Baylay (1908), in Cox (1912) and in Guilford (1927). Cox (ibid.) describes it as a good font of the 14th century, raised on a "central shaft and 8 smaller ones, 38 in. high, 34 in. in diameter." In Pevsner & Williamson (1979): "Of c.1300, and the best font of its date in the county, octagonal, with richly crocketed gables starting from human faces or animals: no doubt by a minor mason from the Southwell chapter house team".
