view of base

Scene Description: as with the two upper volumes, the quadrangular lower base section is at odds with tghe rest; in this case because it is modern [or totally re-cut], as is the top of the kneeling stone behind. By contrast, the octagonal plinth and the original kneeling stone appear much older

No entry found for Stoke St. Gregory in the Domesday survey. The entry for Stoke st Gregory in Enhlsih Heritage [Listing NGR: ST3481027155] (1955) reports a "Mid C14 font" font in this church. The 'Listed Buildings' of the Taunton Deane Borough Council [www.tauntondeane.gov.uk/tdbcsites/her/her_lb/lbdets.asp?id=001880] [accessed 29 September 2009] notes a "mid-C14 font" in this church, an "unusual font". Not mentioned in Pevsner (1958). The font has an odd appearance, as if it had been made up of unmatched volumes; the well-executed basin with its cusped decoration clashes with a clustered-column pedestal more suited to an earlier period font; the quadrangular lower base is either modern or drastically re-cut, as is the upper part of the kneeling stone, while the octagonal plinth and its kneeling stone appear much older. The font cover is modern, metal scroll ribs with a cross finial on a flat octagonal wooden base.
