Described and illustrated in Bach-Nielsen (1998: 108-109) as one of a group of mid-17th century hexagonal mounted baptismal fonts; they are shaped like an hour-glass, both basin and base approximately even in size and ornamentation; the font at Skellerup has no distinguishable basin vs. underbowl, all being one from the upper rim; the painted scenes on these sides are identified in Bach-Nielsen as: 1)the Ark of the Covenant; 2)Noah and his family give thanks to God; 3)the Rainbow after the Flood/Deluge ; 4)God sends a dove (+inscription); 5)a dove carrying an olive branch in its beak over the Flood waters; 6)the prophet Elijah is carried away to heaven. Thick ornate mouldings with putto (?, cherub?) heads and gilded foliage form the arrises of both the basin and the base. There is a centre ring with the Sacred Heart symbol. On the upper curves of the base there are three (?) "mascaron" heads. The sides of the base are ornamented with painted scenes [the numbers match the location of the basin scenes]: 1b)Ark of the Covenant; 2b)the Pharaoh and his army drown in the Red Sea; 3b)the circumcision of child Christ; 4b)the baptism of Christ; 5b)the Flood with Noah and the ark; 6b)Joshua parts the waters of the Jordan. Bach-Nielsen (ibid., 101-118) states that the iconography of these Reformation and Post-Reformation fonts reflects the use of "Luther's christening ritual [that] was introduced from the Taufbüchlein with its three main parts: Matt. 7:7-8, Mark 10:13-16 and Luther's Prayer at the Flood" (ibid., p. 118); he also points out the depiction of "the perilous water" as a "threatening element" in the iconography on these fonts. The font is raised on several (3?, 4?) rounded stumps.
