Cognate Fonts: Similar, though not identical, to the font at Trinitatis kirke, in Fredericia, and to the font at nearby Anst
Church Notes: late-12thC church; modified late-18thC and 1919;
Described and illustrated in Danmarks kirker: Ribe amt (Bd. 4, hft. 26: 2653, 2656- 2659, 2665) as a Romanesque baptismal font in reddish granite dated to ca. 1200, probably the work of the same stonemaster who carried out other sculptural work in this same church, since the motifs are similar; cylindrical basin ornamented with a rope moulding at the upper rim; all around the basin sides an arcade of ten round arches with distinct capitals and bases, and a variety of individual motifs in the spandrels (cross, bird, several lillies/fleurs-de-lis, right-handed swastika, etc.); the figures in the arcade are identified as: 1)male figure with large key in his right hand [cf. below for Mackeprang's identification]; 2)acanthus tree / Tree of Life; 3)male figure wearing cape under which a pleated skirt shows; his left hand is hidden; his right hand holds an ax; the source mentions a "puldet hat" [=crown hat] on his head [cf. below for Mackeprang's identification]; 4)female figure with both hands to her stomach; her breasts are noticeable and her hair is braided on her left side; 5)male figure with "full" hair, left hand to his stomach, right hand holds a lilly sceptre; pleated skirt [cf. below for Mackeprang's identification]; 6)plant / Tree of life, with a bird on either side of the stalk and a third one above, picking on the leaves/fruit; the birds resemble doves; 7)female figure with long hair, necklace and long pleated skirt, has left hand to her stomach while the right holds a horn; 8)acanthus plant / Tree of Life with two birds (doves?) on the lower part; 9)male (?) figure wearing alba and chasuble has "wild" curly hair and hands in orant position; 10)female (?) figure with long braided hair on both sides wears locket at her neck and a long cape that hides her arms; under the cape a pleated skirt shows; she may be wearing the same type of hat as the figure no. 3. The program is reported inis same source as being similar to the font now at St. Tinitatis kirke in Fredericia, which was originally from the town of Ullerop in the Vejle amt. The underbowl apears plain, ending in a cylindrical upper base [though this part actually belongs to the same stone block as the basin]. The lower base looks like an upside-down cushion capital: square with rounded upper corners leaving four semicircular sides; of these one is blank, while the other three contain: 1)two stork-like birds facing each other, with a smaller one in between [the shape of the tails suggests peacocks]; 2)acanthus plant / Tree of Life with two quadrupeds, the one on the left is too damaged for identification purposes, but the one on the right is clearly a goat; 3)two animals passant: a deer on the right is followed by a goat on the right, both facing right. Mackeprang (1941: 56ff, 316ff) suggests the folowing identifications for three of the figures: the man with the key, as St. Peter; the man with ax as St. Olav; the female and male to the right of St. Olav, as Eve and Adam. His identification of St. Olav is challenged in Lidén (1998: 66-81), who argues that "on 12th century baptismal fonts there are thus no pictures of Olaf, which are not met with until the early 15th century" (ibid., p. 81). The present location of the font at the centre of the nave, beneath the chancel arch dates, according to DK... [cf. supra], only to 1966; in 1751 the font was located at the est end of the nave; in 1797 it was moved to the northeast corner; the font underwent restoration in 1919-1920, at which time it was moved farther north into the apse; from this location it was moved to the present one, as indicated above.
