Described and illustrated in Danmarks kirker: Ribe amt (Bd. 4, hft. 25: 2481, 2493-2495) as a Romanesque baptismal font in granite dated to ca. 1200, probably the work of the same stonemaster who carried out the south portal of this same church; the basin is almost cylindrical, slightly narrower at the lower end, and is ornamented with an arcade of round arches; in each arch, a human figure [order may not be sequential]: acanthus plant - bird - a human figure with long hair - another such - human figure with long hair and short skirt - human figure with long-handled ax - human figure with short hair and long beard. his hands holding the columns of the arcade (Samson is suggested as possible identification] - human figure with short hair jumping in the air: hands to the stomach and legs up in the air; no skirt - human figure with curly air holds a lilly sceptre. All figures are approximately of the same size and they all wear skirts except the acrobat (?). All the columns of the arcade have well-defined capitals and bases. The base of the font is a cylindrical pedestal with three mouldings; at 90-degree angles of the lowest volume there are four small buttresses which make the lower base square. The granite of the basin is darker than that of the base and has more black and red particles in its composition. The font, which was restored in 1862, was moved to the present position in 1884 for safety reasons. Decribed and illustrated in Mackeprang (1941: 306ff), who groups it with other "arkadenfontene" [=arcade fonts] and obviates its similarity with the basins of the fonts at Egtved, Skærup, St. Trinitatis in Fredericia and, particularly, Vamdrup; he also mentions that two of the figures carry lilly sceptres and one a ladle (?). Lidén (1998: 6-81) argues against Nancke-Krogh's (1995: 125) interpretation of the figure with the ax as St. Olaf (St. Olav) and suggests an identification of the ax-man as "arbetande Adam" [=Adam at work] instead. On-site notes: the arcade on the basin sides has ten arches, nine with human figures but one appears to be a plant.
