INFORMATION

FontID: 05393ARD

Church/Chapel: Ardre kyrka
Church Location: Ardre kyrkby, 623 66 Ljugarn, Sweden

Font Location in Church: Inside the church, in the chancel, S side
Century and Period: 13th century, Late Romanesque
Workshop/Group/Artisan: ciborietyp [SHM] / Paradise font
Cognate Fonts: Bunge
Church Notes: 13thC church
Font Notes:
Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. IV, hft. 5: 824, 826, 828, 829) as a limestone baptismal font probably dated to the first half of the 13th century (the original church is reported to have been demolished -except for the tower- in the second quarter of the 13th century, which is probably the date to which the baptismal font belongs); the font is of the "Paradise font" type, a quasi-cylindrical mounted design with slightly tapering basin sides ornamented with a blind arcade of round arches; the base has a conical stem with upper ring moulding, and a splayed lower base. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910814F2] as a baptismal font of the 'ciborietyp' made of limestone in the mid-13th century by a Gotland workshop; the SHM entry remarks on the unusual presence of an arcade in this type of font design. On-site notes: the basin shows a horizontal crack all around the top of the arches of the basin sides; it appears to extend right through and the damage was probably caused by water freezing inside the basin. [NB: we have no information on the font of the original church here].
