Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. IV, hft. 5: 742, 743, 757, 760, 762) as an octagonal limestone basin, probably dated to ca. 1375 (Roosval), with a crude Gothic arcade ornamenting its sides, triquetra and other motifs in the spandrels. The central volume or upper base is a rounded pedestal, too broad to fit the basin lower end, obviously not the original base for this basin; it has four human heads set at 90-degree angles [Calcarius-like?] and a date is suggested to the early 13th century (Roosval). The two upper parts of the font were painted red, blue, white and black in the 18th century. The tall plain cylindrical lower base or plinth dates to the latest restoration of the church in the 1950s. The font has been moved around in this church: in 1793 it is reported (ibid., p. 757) to have been moved from its original position in the western end of the nave to the choir; a 1948 photograph (ibid., p. 742) shows the font standing in the centre of the nave, just east of the centre pews; another photograph (ibid., p. 743), taken in 1960, after the 1956-1958 restorations, shows the font at the foot of the chancel arch, on the north side, opposite the pulpit. On-site notes: this last location was confirmed in our August 2012 visit to this church. On-site notes: the font appears to be a crude work of local workmanship; the shape of the basin is very irregular and the execution of the motifs is equally crude. There is a crude plain and flat wooden octagonal lid, painted in marble-like in grey, blue and white, and dated to the 18th century. [NB: cf. Index entry for Gammelgarn No. 2 for the fragments found buried under the nave floor, likely to have belonged to the original basin]
