INFORMATION

FontID: 05389ALA
Church/Chapel: Ala kyrka
Country Name: Sweden
Location: Gotland, Gotllands län
Directions to Site: Located near Kräklingbo
Ecclesiastic Region: Visby stift
Historical Region: Kräklinge ting, Gotlands län
Font Location in Church: Inside the church, at the W end of the nave, by the S doorway
Date: ca. 1250?
Century and Period: 13th century (mid?), Romanesque
Workshop/Group/Artisan: Paradise font / Paradisenfunten
Cognate Fonts: Anga, Kräklingbo No. 1, etc.
(Söderberg, 1978) -- the roof of the church and that of the tower were destroyed by a fire in 1938 [the Riksantikvarieämbetet (RAÄ) has before-and-after photographs of the building]
Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. IV, hft. 4: 635-636) as a limestone cylindrical mounted baptismal font dated to the middle of the 13th century [NB: SK gives a measurement that includes a plinth; there is no plinth at present]. In Fåhraeus (1974) and Söderberg (1978) with similar date. On-site notes: baptismal font of the plain 'Paradisenfunten' type; the sides of the plain round basin taper in; the conical stem of the base has a roll moulding atop; the lower base splays out and then down with vertical sides. There is piece cut out of the upper rim, perhaps a modification to accommodate a font cover in the past; the basin is cracked horizontally. The outer surface of the basin shows patches of redish paint forming decorative patterns. [NB: the original church dates to the mid-12thC but we have no information of its earlier font].
