Scene Description: the 18thC font with the date, 1741, painted on the basin side; the running inscription around the upper rim refers to the donors -- although the later fonts were of a totally diferent design from the Romanesque fonts of Gotland, a lower base decorated with four animal heads was retained in some of them, like the one at Gothem -- notice also the modern casters beneath the font, which allow for the movement of the font to wherever is needed within the church at a given time

Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. IV, hft. 1: 108 et al., and Bd. IV, hft 6: 859, 862, 891) mentions "fragments of font by Majestatis or some closely allied master", that have been preserved. A plan showing the "attempted reconstruction of [the] nave made during excavations in conjunction with restoration 1949-50" (Bd. IV, hft. 6 pl. 922 on p. 859) shows the placement for the medieval font at the centre of the nave, between the two central columns. On-site notes: the 18th-century font is located by the pulpit. [NB: the present baptismal font is wooden and dates from 1741; it has garlands on the basin, cherubs and more garlands on the upper base and a poor imitation of the type of base with animals found in the earlier fonts of the island; it is raised on casters; it has a centre drain in the inner basin; no font cover present]. [re-visited Gothem Kyrka 23 May 2018]. We did not find any fragments of the old font anywhere in this church.
