Church Notes: original church 13thC; renovated 17thC; the Danish-style top of the tower is actually mid-19thC, about the same time that the southeast doorway was replaced by a large window; sacristy added 1880s
Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. III: 58, 60) as a late-17th century baptismal sandstone baptismal font painted in red, green and gold; it is an overly ornamented object with a hemispherical basin on which appears a large garland; a plain narrow cylindrical upper base connects with a baluster pedestal that looks like an ornamental vase, complete with another large garland and an angel head. The basin has a rounded back-splash ornamented with another angel head. The font stands on a square plinth and bears an inscription with the name of the donor and the date [Oluf Lundsberg, 1681]. [NB: cf. Index entry for Västerhejde No. 1 for an earlier, mid-13 century Paradise font also in this church]
