Church Notes: original church 13thC; renovated 17thC; the Danish-style top of the tower is actually mid-19thC, about the same time that the southeast doorway was replaced by a large window; sacristy added 1880s
Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. III: 59) as a two-piece limestone baptismal from the mid-13th century (dated to ca. 1240 by analogy to the west tower), now painted in light green, black and red, though the paint job is not original; the font had been buried until the 1850s in the churchyard and was mentioned in the 1652 inventory. This font was moved to the Gotlands fornsal museum [cf. infra]. It is either a Paradise font, or related to the group, with a hemispherical basin with large ribs, and a conical pedestal ornamented with diagonal fluting; unlike many of the fonts in this group, its ornamentation is rather irregular, the ribs are more like round arches and it has a rope motif below the rim side. The lower base on which it now stands is modern. In Reutersvärd (1967). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910502F3] as a 'musselcuppstyp' baptismal fonrt made of sandstone in the second half of the 13th century, now much restored/reconstructed and located in the Gotlands fornsal, Visby (inv.nr. B832). No cover present. [NB: cf. Index entry for Västerhejde No. 2 for a later, 17th-century font also in this church]
