Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (1925- ) as an object found in the churchyard ["på kyrkogården"]; it was identified in Roosval (1926) as probably the base of a baptismal font from the Bestiarius group and dated to mid-12th century [NB: the early datings of fonts in Roosval have been revised later, even by himself]. On-site notes: the base is round-to-square, with a thick roll moulding on the upper part, and a large acanthus vine with arum bunches on some of the sides; below it is a rope moulding; two of the angles of the lower square volume are now broken off; on the remaining two, one is a lion protome of exquisite carving quality; the other appears to be a lion's head. The whole base is a fine work by an accomplished master. This fragment may be all that remains of the original font of the early church here. [cf. Index entry for Roma No. 2 (Gotland) for a later font in this church]
