Workshop/Group/Artisan: Master Mathis?
Described and illustrated in Basilika Minor (1999: 66-67) as a large hemispheric baptismal font, perhaps by the hand of Meister Mathis, dated by an inscription to 1487 (or 1484?); the upper rim is slanted and polygonal, probably dodecagonal; the basin sides and underbowl are ornamented with pairs of deep trefoil windows, with angels in some of them; one of the angels holds a twisting scroll with the date in Roman numerals. The short circular base matches the ornamentation of the basin with large round arches. The font cover is pyramidal (dodecagonal?) with a Latin cross finial; it appears of a much later date and made of metal. [Our gratitude to Ursula Tschan for bringing this font to our attention]
