There are two entries for Fritwell [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SP5229/fritwell/] [accessed 7 December 2016], neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. The Ecclesiastical and Architectural Topography of England: Oxfordshire (1850) notes: "The font D[ecorated], octagonal, with carving in low relief." Listed by Bond (1908) among a group of Norman fonts "representing the Tree of Spiritual Life and Knowledge" [...] "of Eastern inspiration". Noted in Kelly's Oxford Directory of 1911: "the font is octagonal, with carving in low relief and is a Decorated work" [Kelly (ibid.) also notes a stoup of early date -- cf. Index entry for Fritwell No. 2]. The Victoria County History (Oxford, vol. 6, 1959) notes: "The dedication to the Norwegian saint, Olave, suggests that Fritwell's church was dedicated in the 11th century. [...] In 1103 a grant was made of its tithes [...] The Romanesque chancel arch, now inserted in the north wall of the chancel, the nave arcades, and the north and south doorways are the oldest parts of the church. The north door has cable mouldings on the dripstone terminating in two grotesque animal heads, and the south door is surmounted by a tympanum with a carving representing two monsters on either side of a tree. (fn. 299) The chancel was rebuilt early in the 13th century, when the south aisle and tower were added. [...] The font is octagonal, with carving in low relief"; a footnote refers to "Buckler drawing in MS. Top. Oxon. a 66, f. 266" in the Bodleian Library. In Sherwood & Pevsner (1974): "Font. Dec[orated], octagonal and tapering, with an ogee-headed panel on each face."
