There are two entries for [North] Petherton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST2933/north-petherton/] [accessed 10 April 2018], one of which mentions "1 church. 0.75 church lands" in it. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Somerset, vol. 6, 1992) notes: "North Petherton church was probably a minster of royal foundation [...] Peter, the king's clerk, afterwards bishop of Chester, held the church in 1066 [...] A late 13th-century recess in the south wall of the nave, the 14th-century font, and a brass indent of Eleanor Paulet (d. 1413) in the south aisle are all that remain from before the rebuilding of nave, chancel, and aisles in rubble in the 15th century". Not mentioned in Pevsner (1958). The entry for this church in Historic England [IoE Number: 269339] reports a 14th-century font in it. Baptismal font of stone consisting of an octagonal basin raised on a pedestal base and lower base, all three octagonal; each panel of the basin has a foliage motif inscribed in a cusped quatrefoil, itself in a square; deeply-carved but plain quatrefoils decorate the underbowl; equal depth is found in the trefoiled windows cut into the stem; the lower base has three parallel mouldings on it.
