Font Notes:
Anderson (1864) writes: "That Ellesmere was originally a Saxon collegiate church is evident from the mention of two priests in the Domesday description of the manor". Noted in Romilly Allen (1888) as a font dated 1569. Cox & Harvey (1907) list a post-Reformation font dated 1569. Included in Bond (1908) among fonts dated to the reign of Elizabeth I, this one to 1569. Newman & Pevsner (2006) note that the font in the north aisle of Ellesmere church is a 19th-century replacement of the 1569 font; the modern font is described as being in the Perpendicular style, "with small square panels of Christ's Passion". English Heritage Listing NGR: SJ3460438432 [www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-260810-church-of-st-mary-ellesmere-rural-] [accessed 7 January 2013] reports a "panelled octagonal font (1826)" in this church. [NB: we have no information on the whereabouts of the 16th-century font or the earlier medieval one(s)]
