There are two entries for Docking [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TF7637/docking/] [accessed 8 April 2014], but neither mentions a church or cleric in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church of Docking is dedicated to St. Mary; covered with lead, and a chancel tiled. At the west end is a large square tower with one bell. [...] It was anciently a rectory valued at 46 marks, and appropriated to the priory of Ibrey in France, given by Goel de Ibreyo, as is said, and in the 28th of Edward I" [i.e., 1300]. The present font here is reported in Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 as a "handsome, and elborately sculptured" font. Described in James (1930): "the font is notable [...] having figures of saints round both the bowl and the base. On the base are certainly SS. Katherine, Margaret, Apollonia, and three holding children. There are male saints round the bowl, and of none of these can I be quite certain." [NB: the heads of many of the figures have been broken off]. Bond (1908) identifies the figures of the basin as "the four Latin Doctors alternate wit the four Evangelists, and at the foot of the bowl are the symbols of each Evangelist. Bond (ibid.) identifies on the base "eight female saints: among them are St Catherine with sword and wheel; St Dorothea with pincers; St Margaret with spear and dragon; St Mary Magdalen with vase and long hair." Described in Pevsner & Wilson (1999): "Pretty Perp[endicular] piece, but much damaged". Noted in uillustrated in Knott (2006): "one of the loveliest late medieval fonts in East Anglia." The font is covered with an eight-sided pyramidal lid made of wood.
