Bond (1908) writes: "At St Werburgh, Derby, the desk of the lectern rests on a well-executed pelican vulning herself, with her four young ones; this pelican was the finial of the font cover till 1711." Pevsner (1978) notes the font cover: "Font cover of wrought iron by Bakewell, 1716, with scrolly leaf motifs; very attractive."
