Bond (1908) cites a record of an entry made in 1630 for expenses related to the font cover: "Item, paide to William Wadsworth for two paire of bonds, a hasp and a staple, a lock, a hook, a pin to hang the pullis on, another at the top of the cover, and 2 staples, all these are about the font, 5s, 8d." The font cover, Bond adds (ibid.), was still around in 1717 for, on that date one shilling was paid "for a Rope for the Font." Pevsner (1978) notes the modern font: "Baluster font in Pentelicon marble, made in 1974 to a design in Gibb's 'A book of architecture' (1728)." The Derby City Council info page [www.visitderby.co.uk] refers to it as "the unusual Rolls-Royce font".
