Described in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a Perpendicular font which, like those at Shermanbury and Thakeham, have "peculiar roundels on some of the panels, like those on chests of an earlier date". Bond (1908) quotes this one among several examples of recorded entries for expenditures on fonts and/or font covers: "In 1481 at Cowfold, Sussex, vjd. was paid 'pro yre pro ffantae et a loke'". The Victoria County History (Sussex, vol. 6, pt. 3, 1987) notes: "There was apparently a church by 1232 [...] The chancel, [...] was built in the 13th century. [...] The panelled font was paid for in 1481-2, [...] but has been much recut." The VCH entry is footnoted: "S.A.C. ii. 321; it leaked and needed repair in 1638: W.S.R.O., Ep. II/15/1, p. 46." Iin Whiteman (1994). [NB: we have no information on the font of the 13th-century church here].
