Scene Description: Source caption: "Parts of the church of St Nicholas are of Saxon origin, (the tower and chancel arch), but the bulk of the nave was rebuilt by the Normans. In the later twelfth century, a unique two-storey sanctuary was built, fitted into the existing structure of the chancel. The timber balustrade to the upper sanctuary chapel, from about 1180, is said to be the oldest decorative timberwork surviving in Britain."

There is an entry for this Compton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU9547/compton/] [accessed 7 May 2015], and it mentions a church in it. A font here is noted in Allen (1831): "The font is a square basin supported by a round pillar." Allen also notes that a church existed here in Saxon times, "as appears by the return of the inquest at the time of the general survey" [Domesday?]. Described in Brayley (1850): "The font is old, and of unusual form; the upper part being square (with a basin for immersion), but having its sides and angles chamfered down to connect it with a low round basement, or pedestal." Noted in Hussey (1852): "The font is coeval with the edifice, of peculiar shape, but not fine" [Hussey (ibid.) dates the church to the late-Norman or Transitional period]. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. Described and illustrated in Bond (1908) as a baptismal font of the 13th century; the basin is shaped like a prism with a square top and bevelled corners at the bottom to meet the ring of the round stem of the base; the lower volume of the base and the plinth are quadrangular. In the Victoria County History, Surrey (1911): "The church was mentioned in the Domesday Survey of Compton. [...] In the centre of the nave at its western end is the large font of late 12th-century date. The design is peculiar, and looks like a rude imitation of a Venetian well-head, the bowl being shaped as a capital, square at the top with the angles canted off to a circular necking. This rests upon a short circular stem and base, and the whole upon a square table and chamfered plinth."
