There are five entries for Chediston [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TM3577/chediston/] [accessed 13 November 2017], one of which reports "0.8 churches. 0.13 church lands" in it. Font here noted in Lewis' Dictionary of 1848: "a font of Caen stone, curiously sculptured". Noted in Parker (1855) as a good Perpendicular font "with emblems of the Trinity". Described in Cox & Harvey (1907) as one of a group of East Anglian baptismal fonts in which "is the accurrence of alternate erect lions and wild hairy men (termed 'woodhouses') round the octagon shaft of the base". C&H mention Chediston, Halesworth, Middleton, Theberton and Wissett, all in the Hundred of Blything. This same source identifies the Evangelists' symbols alternating with angels around the sides of the basin. Described and illustrated in Cautley (1982). Simon Knott [www.suffolkchurches.co.uk/chediston.htm] [accessed 13 November 2017] writes: "The fine East Anglian font is in excellent condition, its lions and woodwoses standing proudly. It is very like the one across the valley at Wissett, and they were probably carved by the same hand."
