Cox & Harvey (1907) quote a correspondent of the Gentleman's Magazine of ca. 1749: "Here is a stone pulpit and two fonts; an old one of stone standing uppon a pillar, and a new one of marble, erected by the contribution of several gentlemen of that town, which is constantly used." Noted in Verey & Brooks (1999-2002): "Fonts. The one in use Perp[endicular], in mutilated condition. Thrown out c.1700, but now incongruosly set on Scott's steps of grey Derbyshire marble. The other, in the Lady Chapel, is a pretty early C18 marble piece" [NB: the 'Scott' mentioned above is trhe Victorian architect George Gilbert Scott, who directed the mid-19th century renovation of the church, as the same source informs]. The font consists of an octagonal basin the sides of which are decorated with shields inscribed in foiled panels; raised on an octagonal stem and a lower base of the same shape, all terribly worn and eroded. The 'steps' referred to above constitute the plinth on which the font is raised. Verey & Brooks (ibid.) note a font by Scott [cf. supra] "with good brass cover of 1890" in the Holy Trinity church, Watermoor, also in Cirencester [NB: neither of the post-1700 fonts heve been entered separately in this Index]
