Font Notes:
Cox (1875-1877) notes: "At the west end is the font, of an unusual oblong shape. On one side is the same date as that over the door, on another is a shield charged with a saltire, on the third the Greek character Ω, and on the fourth, which appears to have been originally fixed against the wall, the initials T. Y." Cox (ibid.) further notes that there very likely was a chapel by 1280 here, probably the same one that is recorded as being dedicated to St. Anne in the 'Valor Ecclesiaticus' (27 Henry VIII) [1536?] as "Capella de Bukstones in pochia de Bakewell"; it is not known whether this chapel had a font, or simply used the holy well for baptisms, if any were administered in it. The WEB site www.merseyside.com gives details of churches open in Derbyshire; among them is the church of St. Anne in Buxton: "The font at the west end is reputed to have some Saxon carving. In the 19th century it was used as a pig trough but was rescued, installed in St Anne's and re-dedicated in 1906." (ibid., p. 5).
