The National Gazetteer of 1868 notes: "The church, which is dedicated to St. Mary and St. Michael, is a large structure in the perpendicular and decorated styles of architecture", but does not mention a font in it. Wilson (1870) notes: "The font […] a modern font raised on a cushioned step in the centre […] stands in the nave at the west end", but describes the church as modern and does not mention a previous one. Bond (1908) makes a reference to the church records in which "a covering for the font" was made in 1608, but makes no direct reference to the font itself.
