On-site notes: only a fragment of this 12th-century object remains, but it is enough to give an idea of the whole: it consists of a roughly cylindrical basin mounted on a plain round pedestal; the sides of the basin have beautifully rendered motifs, chiefly pairs of birds picking at ugly monstruous heads. The object may have been originally a cloister fountain and later converted to a stoup (or viceversa); there are drain holes at the mouths of the four beasts (not all of them remain). [NB: the fragment that remains now may have been cut thus to have it fit agaiinst a wall or graded surface. It is by no means certain that it was ever used as a font or stoup].
