On-site notes: the baptismal font at the cathedral church of Valencia has a large octagonal basin semi-embeded in the west wall, the recess ornamented like the inside, a huge pilgrim shell; it has a rounded underbowl and is raised on a plain short round pedestal. The basin has an addition on its left, a small stoup-like vessel with a rounded inside well and its own drain and cover; the cover matches the leather-covered one of the main basin, studded with brass and with a papal tiara sketched in the centre. [NB: at the time of our visit -July 2001- the font was locked and the warden was away]. [We are grateful to Jordi Gimeno, of www.romanicat.net, for his photograph of this font]
