Scene Description: Source caption: "Black and white illustration of St John's parish church, Bedminster, Bristol (17th–19th century church), published about 1838. It shows the tower from the southwest, with its angled buttresses. In the foreground is the churchyard with toppled gravestones, and in the background on the right hand side of the image is the nave of the church." [NB: the original ca.1003 (?) church had been totally destroyed in 1645; this was the 17th-19th church that would be demolished in 1854].

Mentioned in Bond (1908: 265) as one of a group of "well meant fonts [!] put up between the Reformation and the Rebellion". The only church in Bedminster old enough to have such a font would have been St. John's, whose origins can be traced to the begining of the 11th century [cf. P.M. Draper's information in the Churchcrawler WEB site for more information on this church]. Since this church was destroyed by incendiary bombs on 24 November 1940, the font may have been destroyed at that time; the church itself remained in ruins until it was demolished in 1967. The 16ht-17th century font is now [March 2016] in the church of St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol -- cf. Index entry for Bristol no. 6].
