There is an entry for Ashford [-in-the-Water] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TQ0771/ashford/] [accessed 27 May 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Cox (1875-1877) writes: "At the west end of the church is the old font, which is octagon, and of chalice-shaped design. The alternate panels bear uncharged shields, and below them appear, on opposite sides, the head and tail of a dragon, or evil spirit." Described in Bond (1908) as "being of fourteenth century work and of extraordinary design: the head of the salamander being represented emerging from one side of the bowl, while the tail with its single knot enters the bowl from the opposite side. [NB: Bond's identification of certain animals, including salamanders is not always reliable]. Bunting (2001), with identification is probably based on Bond's. Noted in Pevsner (1978): "Font. Octagonal, Perp[endicular], the bowl similar to Monyash." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SK1950469722] notes: "Church. C12, C13 with C14 alterations, largely rebuilt 1868-70 [...] Inner door has refused C12 tympanum from original church, depicting tree with lion and hog to sides. [...] C14 octagonal font with quatrefoil stem."
