Described and illustrated in García de Castro (1995) as a baptismal font of the late 11th century made of quartzite; the monolithic font shows two volumes: the upper is a cauldron-shaped basin very similar to the one at the church of San Miguel in nearby Bárcena [cf. Index entry]; the irregularity of the upper basin shape at Sangoñedo [it is slightly oval] is probably due to the crudeness of the work rather than any will to achieve an oval shape; the lower volume is a plain cylindrical base; both volumes are totally plain. Described in Alvarez Martínez (1999) as a 11th-century monolithic baptismal font resting directly on the ground and devoid of any ornamentation. Múñiz López & García Alvarez-Busto (2007) suggest it belongs to a group of fonts established by García de Castro (1995) that includes cognate fonts at San Miguel de Conforcos (Aller), San Miguel de Barcena (Tineo) and San Juan de Sangoñéu (Tineo) and the one at Castrillón.
